The Story of Tall Order Socks

Tall Order is a family-owned and operated business started by twin brothers, Mike and Dan Friedman. Standing tall at 6’11” and 6’9” they were always referred to as the “Twin Towers” growing up—and with towering heights, they always struggled to find quality socks that fit comfortably. 

On September 11, 2001, their nickname took on a tragic irony when their father was killed in the attacks on the World Trade Center. In the midst of this tragedy, Mike and Dan’s mother Lisa was on a mission to find her husband in NYC. While searching NYC with her 11-year-old sons in tow, she handed out essentials to first responders—most notably, clean socks. 

Following 9/11, the Friedman’s received overwhelming support from family, friends, and charitable organizations. They learned the power of perseverance and doing the right thing, even when it’s challenging. To honor their father and show their appreciation for those who supported them during these turbulent times, Tall Order was created. 

“The ‘Tall Order’ to pay it forward for all the help we received after 9/11, is at the core of our mission and everything we do,” said Lisa Friedman Clark, President at Tall Order. “We are so proud that in the 5 years since we launched we’ve donated over $300,000 to help families and youth by giving to nonprofits including Tuesday’s Children, The Aaron Judge All Rise Foundation, and the FealGood Foundation.”

Aaron Judge Becomes Equity Partner in Tall Order

Respectively, their intimacy with the struggle of finding size-inclusive apparel caught the attention of a giant in professional sports. American League Home Run King and New York Yankees Captain Aaron Judge knows as well as anyone the same struggle Mike and Dan used as inspiration to create the Tall Order brand. A partnership between the reigning AL MVP and unique footwear company was born and the official launch of Judge’s first-ever collection soon followed.

There is a central core to everything NOVUS and Tall Order do as companies. Separately, they are invested in their respective communities. Together, they will continue to build on their natural philanthropic efforts.

Similar to Tall Order, NOVUS was founded by two brothers Garrett and Nick and their friend Scott back in 2011. As college students selling crewnecks and tanks to their college teammates, they weren’t necessarily looking to start a business but rather looking for a way to make an impact on those they encountered—and they continue to do so as they grow.

The company name, NOVUS, is Latin for “fresh” or “new beginnings” and is a reminder to persevere and live with passion and conviction. Facing adversity with courage is one of the many common themes between Tall Order and NOVUS—and because of that, the collaboration between these two brands is dynamic.
